North Carolina State Parks: Here in this Place
In 2016, the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation celebrated 100 years of North Carolina state parks! In 1916, Mount Mitchell State Park was established at the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. As of the 2016 Centennial, there are 34 state parks, four state recreation areas, and three staffed state natural areas in North Carolina.

Perfect!👍🏻I now have a SECOND tent, which resembles yours. So I'll now have a go at erecting it! My first tent erected itself- when you pulled it out of the bag, ZAP. Half a second. It was when I tried to fold it up again I only bent it irreparably. So into the garbage it went. 🤬

Ah yes, banker hours for the NC state park lake. Being a life long NC resident and outdoor enthusiast who has spent time in Minnesota, i came to the conclusion that NC does a terrible job making waterways, lakes, rivers, creeks. the intracoastal, Sound waters and Ocean accessible. Minnesota which has less than half of the population of NC, but 10k lakes, manages to have very nice ramps, accesses and management for enjoyment by all. Florida also does an amazing job.. of course they have a large permanent resident population plus the astronomical amount of tourists...they certainly give back with opportunities to access water at every turn in both salt and fresh. I have homes on the coast and the Mountains of NC and let me tell you, the state also has quite the number of tourists spending $$. The lack of boat ramps on the southeast coast is very, very sad, not to mention the condition of many. Tens of thousands move here annually and many buy boats before they realize the limited access. Consider Topsail island.. 26 mikes long with a waterway the entire stretch...4 boat ramps...one has 8 parking spaces and the others are war zones on any given day due the lack of space, ramps and facilities. Facilities?...forget that as all of the ones except one that stretch don't even have a functioning street light. As you continue south from there through Wilmington to Southport where approximately 500,000 people are at any given time...there's a half dozen public ramps and Wow, are they insanely crowded from April to November. What is NC doing with all of this $$? I send pics of the public docks and ramp parking lots to give relatives a good laugh in other states...it helps them be thankful of the cold weather they have to put up with because when it's warm they certainly have a great time and an easy going, relaxing experience accessing public water. It's very disappointing as even my children notice how other states we visit seem to have accesses and public green space and parks in abundance. NC seems to lean towards private development and take that tax $ and reduce their responsibility to all of its citizens, not just the wealthy. NC ranks #35 in state and National parks...that says a lot considering we now rank as the 9th most populated with almost 11 million residents. It's not even the number of parks or lack thereof that is so bothersome, but the lack of access to all of this water and beautiful land. My life is well past half over, so i guess i'll never see any change, but i won't blame my children and grandchildren one bit if they don't stick around. If you're wealthy in NC, you'll probably be alright and find some nice private access, but God Bless if you're anything else. 8 to 5 and no swimming unless you're a paying group! SMH...pathetic, NC.
